NELearns2.0

NELearns2.0

I set up a Flickr account in 2007 when the Library Commission staff held a workshop in Kearney, but I hadn't added any photos since. I belong to the "Pets of Nebraska Librarians" group, so I decided to add a couple pictures of our cat, Simon.
I enjoy capturing the "Nebraska Sky" (this is one of my sets) so I tagged one of the stormy pictures as my "NELearns2.0" entries. I hope this works to post this to my blog. If not, I'll just have to try again!

Thing #7:Finding Feeds

I tried the Search Tools listed. After trying them, I probably will not use any except Google Blog Search. I will just look for the RSS feed icon when I am visiting my favorite websites. This is how I have added the RSS feeds that I have, because I was mainly trying to find feeds useful to my Machine Embroidery business. In trying the ones listed in this lesson, I was wasting a lot of time looking through the ones it brought up, only to find many were just blogs, not feeds.
Since I am not on the computer as often as other people, I do not want to add a lot of useless RSS feeds that I do not have time to read through. I also do not have a lot of time when I am working at the library to search RSS feeds, so do not think I will be adding a lot of library-related feeds.

Thing #6 - RSS - Yes, I did it!

Wow, I actually got my RSS newsreader set up, and guess what? I like using it! The only problem I can see is when am I going to be able to keep up with one more thing? And, of course, there is another user name and password to keep track of. I hope to be able to keep up with the Library Commission's RSS.
I had been anticipating getting into RSS feeds, so I have been flagging e-mail sites of interest that have RSS feeds. I actually added one or two of them while I was there last night. Now I need to be checking my embroidery (business) e-mails, and get some of these sites added. It appears that my Yahoo e-mail has a newsreader, but I didn't add it, so I don't know how to add RSS feeds to it.
Libraries could keep up with RSS feeds from the Library Commission, and other libraries/librarians. And if they want to keep up with a large newspaper, they could add one and check on it each day.

Thing #5

I finally got my new IM address set up (the old one didn't work anymore - probably since I hadn't IM'ed for a few years) and I chatted with Allana. She must be such a sweet person - I enjoyed the chat.
I have been thinking about the advantages and disadvantages of using IM. One disadvantage I can think of is that you could constantly be chatting if you had your account on while working at the computer, and not get much work done. (So if you don't have time to chat, you have to set it to appear that you are busy or away.)
IM'ing is a quick way to talk to someone on the internet if they are on at the same time as you, but if you are usually only able to get on after normal business hours, you won't be able to chat with anyone if you have a work-related question. It is less expensive than making a long distance phone call, and you can chat much longer this way.
I use IM'ing in my personal life (or used to) to chat with our older boys after they moved away from home. I don't think even my husband and sons use this as often as they used to - they use the family plan on the cell phones and call when they have a question or need something, as well as just to visit. But when my husband is at work, and his computer is on, sometimes the kids IM, because it gets annoying to have his cell phone going off very often. Also, he uses it with his business associates, just because they can quickly see if he is on, and have a private chat that can go on until the decisions are made.
I haven't checked out Meebo yet. I think I'll wait on that.

I am still a little slow at getting to the "Things" - not sure so much that it is because I am afraid to try new things as finding the time.
A little about me: I have 5 kids (only 1 at home - a freshman in high school), 3 grandsons ages 7 months, 7 1/2 months, and 2 years old, 3 step-grandchildren ranging in age from 2 years to 7 years old. On most weekdays, I get to enjoy the company of Logan, who lives the closest, while his mom and dad are at work. A few days a month I get asked to substitute teach at 2 schools. And I work 3 nights each week (and 1 Saturday a month) at Hoesch Memorial Public Library here in Alma. I also have a professional embroidery business at home: Keri's Kreations - I already have several Christmas orders. I am also trying hard to get Teddy Bear Christmas stockings cut out and sewn for my son-in-law, daughters-in-law, and the 6 grandkids - I did get their names embroidered on the heels already, so 1 step is done! So you can see that even though I have always been a procrastinator, I really don't even have time for that anymore!
I did finally complete "Thing #4" - I hope I understood the directions. Guess I will give it a try right now.

7 1/2 Lifelong Learning Habits

The habit which will be easiest for me is to accept responsibility for my own learning. No one can force me to learn about blogging, RSS Feeds or other technology (but I must admit, NE Learns 2.0 has given me a good push!) I am really excited about learning to use these things since I have been seeing more blogs and RSS Feeds symbols on my embroidery business sights lately. And I want to be able to use them wisely, figuring out which ones will be the most beneficial to my business knowledge.
The habit I will have the most difficulty with is having confidence in myself as a competent, effective learner. I keep telling myself and others that I am technology-challenged, even though I successfully use the internet for finding a lot of useful things. I also am usually able to help our library patrons find what they are looking for on the internet.

New Blogger!

I am excited to be participating in Nebraska Learns 2.0. Even though I started on the first 2 "things" October 7, I just kept procrastinating about setting up my blog until tonight. I tried earlier in the evening, but Blogger just kept giving me one more word verification to type in (and of course my password kept disappearing), so I quit for several hours. And now here I am - a blogger!
